What is Intuitive Eating? [Newsletter]

"Hey Alexa, what's going on with Weight Watchers?"

I love you: Oprah's commercial proclaiming her love for bread. Because, relatable.
I love you, not: The company's new rebranding.

#WakeUpWeightWatchers

What's Happening: Last week the weight-loss empire, Weight Watchers nearly broke the internet. The company announced that starting this summer, it will offer FREE memberships to teens 13-17. This comes after the company introduced their FreeStyle program just a few months ago - to offer more 0 point foods, like non-fat greek yogurt, chicken breasts, veggies and beans. These changes are all a part of WW's work to shift their reputation from a 'diet brand' to a 'lifestyle brand.' The business hopes to increase member retention rates, as part of a goal to grow to a $2 billion brand by 2021.

The problem? Increasing numbers of research studies show that diets don't work, and going on a diet is actually indicative of future weight gain. The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) commented that 35% of 'normal' dieters can develop disordered eating and adolescents are even more vulnerable. On social media, influencers and advocates opened up, sharing powerful stories about how Weight Watchers or dieting in their teens impacted their relationship with their body and food using the hashtag #WakeUpWeightWatchers.

What IS Intuitive Eating?

A hot topic that is more than 'another diet trend' and definitely not a fad. But what is it exactly? Like so many topics on social media it's hard to fully grasp it from a few hundred characters in a caption. Intuitive Eating incorporates some of the familiar non-diet, mindfulness pillars of nutrition philosophies but still stands on its own. Here are some of our favorite RDs and Intuitive Eating experts breaking down what it means to eat intuitively, how to explain what that means to others and eventually practice it yourself.
