Home » Body Image Support
Are you tired of the constant struggle against your body? How much time have you spent fighting against your body? Trying to get it to be a certain size, shape – or make your body more similar to someone else’s body? Do you find yourself engaging in obsessive or compensatory behaviors around food and exercise to control your body or weight?
Considering the amount of time we spend on image-based apps, unrealistic beauty standards and body-based judgments of the world we live in, it’s not surprising that body image struggles are so common. We have seen firsthand how body image concerns touch individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and genders. Our mission is to provide compassionate and effective support for anyone struggling with body image concerns. If you’re ready to get started, we’re ready to work with you.
Body image support encompasses a range of emotional and psychological challenges related to how people perceive and feel about their bodies. Negative body image can encompass feelings of insecurity, dissatisfaction, and self-criticism. These issues can have a significant impact on mental health, relationships, and overall quality of life.
At The Wellful, we approach body image support through a weight-inclusive, person-centered lens. We recognize that these concerns can manifest differently for each individual, and our goal is to provide tailored guidance and strategies that promote increased body trust, acceptance and improved mental well-being.
We understand that body image concerns often involve complex emotional and psychological components and can result from past experiences of trauma, bullying, weight stigma, sexual assault, or feeling othered. We work with clients and collaboratively with their care team to support them in fostering a comprehensive sense of well-being.
It’s common for body image challenges to impact our relationship with food, whether that’s in how someone tries to manipulate their body with food, how someone copes with body distress, the result of years of chronic dieting, or a disconnect of natural cues from our bodies.
Body image support often involves addressing emotional factors such as self-esteem, self-worth, and body trust. These are vulnerable, personal topics and we are honored that clients choose to work with us while doing this brave and healing work.
We recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to body image issues. Our team collaborates closely with each client to develop personalized strategies that address their unique needs and goals. We use elements of various therapeutic modalities such as Internal Family System Therapy (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and somatic work, as well as journaling, mirror exercises and other tools when appropriate. We support open and transparent conversations with clients and if one tool or exercise doesn’t feel like a good fit, there are always others that we can use.
Beyond providing immediate support, we focus on empowering clients with the knowledge and skills needed to move toward a more neutral, or positive, body image long-term. This includes strategies for building self-confidence and resilience.
We foster a supportive community where individuals facing similar challenges can connect, share experiences, and find solace in knowing they are not alone. Our group support sessions and online resources provide a safe space for individuals to express themselves and receive encouragement from peers and professionals alike.
At The Wellful, we believe that everyone deserves to feel comfortable and at home in their own skin. Our body image support services are designed to help individuals feel more peace, trust and comfort with their bodies and themselves.
